Walter Edward Reed III, 77, of Searcy, formerly of Augusta, passed away on Friday, February 16 at his home.
Walter was born March 8, 1946, in Augusta, Arkansas to Walter Bo Reed II and Annie Sue Roberts-Reed..
Waler was a member and Minister Emeritus of 5th Street Church of Christ in Newport, Arkansas. He was the former Pastor and Founder of Calhoun Street Church of Christ in Newport. He was a Bible Scholar and enjoyed sharing the good news of the Holy Scriptures with anyone who would listen. His favorite scripture came from II Timothy 2:15.
Walter attended the Newport Public School System. He was a 1964 graduate of Branch High School in Newport. He then went on to further his education by attending Shorter College in North Little Rock. Later, he went on to attend Long Beach City College of Long Beach California before being drafted into the United States Army. In later years, he went on to attend Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.
Walter united in holy matrimony to Emma Tripp on April 7, 1968, in Augusta, Arkansas.
Walter was drafted and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era. He served from October 1967 until October 1969, when he received an honorable discharge for his service.
Walter was employed as a Dispatcher for the Woodruff County Sheriff's Department for more than 5 years. He had formerly worked with AP&L (Entergy) for over 20 years before retiring. Walter began working for White County Memorial Hospital in the late 1960's, where he worked for about a year.
Walter enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a member of the Augusta School Board. He was the founder of Reed Enterprises, audio and video recording special occasions for various events throughout the community. While living in Long Beach California in the 1960's, he became a professional boxer. He started missionary work in the Bahamas in the early 1990's. He enjoyed debating and preaching throughout the nation. HE was a former Boxing coach and a member of the JC's.
His parents: Walter Bo Reed II and Annie Sue Roberts-Reed, four siblings: Andrew Reed, Thomas Reed, Carrie Butler and Littie Reed all preceded Walter in death.
Survivors are his wife of 55 years Emma Reed of Searcy, AR; one son: Juan (Fallon) Reed of Searcy, AR; one daughter Juana Reed-Hall of Searcy, AR eight grandchildren: Harold (Tori) Hall Jr. of Judsonia, AR; Bryana Reed of Augusta, AR; Ian Hall, Aniah Hall, Kavonne Reed all of Searcy, AR; Alexa Reed of Jonesboro, AR; Monique Hall and Eli Carter both of Conway, AR; and Amia Carter of Searcy, AR; a great grandson Montarius "June Bug" Wesson Jr. of Augusta, AR; His Goddaughter: Joyce ( Stanley) Talbert of Mount Pleasant, TX; three brothers: Joe Nathan Reed of Long Beach, CA; David (Sawanda) Reed and Eugene Reed of Newport, AR; three sisters: Linetta Gist, Olivia Reed and Merry Ann Reed all of Newport, AR and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, February 24 at 10 AM at the 5th Street Church if Christ, 403 5th Street in Newport with Minister Thomas Hardaway officiating. Interment will take place at New Quiet Cemetery in Augusta by C.J.
